Recipes Fresh from the Farmers’ Market

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

Many people tend to gravitate toward buying at supermarkets because of convenience, price and availability, but as more and more farmers markets are emerging we are finding ourselves with more choices and healthier options for ourselves and our families. Here are 10 reasons why farmers markets are more healthier and a wiser choice.

Supporting farmers:
Purchasing from farmer’s markets helps keep farmers in business and contributes to the local economy

Seasonal produce:
Our bodies need different nutrients over different seasons, like root vegetables during autumn and winter for warmth and to ‘ground’ us during the cooler months

Ethical meat:
Grass-fed beef is sold at the farmers markets - a healthier alternative to factory raised animals

Interactive experience:
You can speak to the farmer about the product, ask questions and ask how it is prepared

Nutrient packed produce:
Farmer’s markets sell local produce which means it traveled small distances and was just harvested to provide you with the most vitamins and minerals for your health

It's good for the environment:
Cutting down on food processing, packaging, and travel will reduce the amount of fossil fuels burned

Tasting samples:
You will always discover new foods and products that some farmers will offer a sampling of to try, especially if it’s something not  that common

Variety:
At the farmers market you find an amazing array of produce that you don’t see in your average supermarket.

Knowing where your food comes from:
Meeting and talking to farmers and food artisans is a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced

Hidden Gems:
Most markets will sell all-natural body products, locally sourced chocolates home made ice cream, and homemade baked goods

FOOD EQUALITY:

Our market is a program of Wyoming Food for Thought Project - we are working to create local solutions to hunger and food access for everyone.
An optional $2 donation or jar of Peanut Butter (or other non-perishable food item) will help us give kids access to food when they're not in school.
